This pysanka is a stunning example of Petrykivka painting, a celebrated Ukrainian folk art known for its expressive floral and bird motifs. Originating from the Dnipropetrovsk region, Petrykivka painting is characterized by intricate flowers, leaves, and stylized birds, often rendered in vivid hues of red, yellow, green, purple and blue—colors symbolizing prosperity, happiness, and protection against evil spirits. Unlike traditional pysanky, which rely on geometric symmetry and the wax-resist method, Petrykivka pysanky are created with freehand brushwork, emphasizing fluidity and movement.
The design on this egg features a majestic, stylized rooster, painted in radiant shades of orange, red, and yellow. Its flowing feathers, detailed with fine brush strokes, create a sense of energy and grace. The rooster’s expressive face is accentuated with blue and red details. Surrounding the bird are swirling floral and foliage elements in vibrant green and blue, painted in the signature Petrykivka style. These organic forms make the composition feel dynamic and alive.
The creation of a Petrykivka pysanka requires exceptional skill in freehand painting, often using specialized brushes—some crafted from cat fur—to achieve the delicate, feathery strokes seen in the bird’s plumage and floral embellishments. Mounted on a wooden stand, this pysanka is a striking representation of Ukraine’s artistic heritage, ensuring that the vibrant tradition of Petrykivka painting continues to thrive and inspire new generations.

Technique
The art of writing pysanky in the Petrykivka style combines two deeply rooted Ukrainian traditions: the ancient wax-resist technique of pysanka-making and the vibrant floral motifs of Petrykivka painting. Originating from the Dnipropetrovsk region, Petrykivka painting is known for its intricate flowers, leaves, and stylized birds, often executed in bright colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue. These motifs symbolize prosperity, happiness, and protection against evil spirits .
When applied to pysanky, Petrykivka designs transform the traditional egg into a dynamic, free-flowing work of art, rich with meaning and spiritual depth. Unlike traditional pysanka patterns, which emphasize geometric symmetry, Petrykivka pysanky embrace fluidity, movement, and organic compositions, reflecting the beauty of nature. The process is labor-intensive, requiring not only the wax-resist method but also the mastery of freehand brushwork, sometimes using specialized brushes made from cat fur to achieve delicate details .
Petrykivka pysanky are a modern evolution of Ukrainian heritage, merging folk symbolism with expressive artistic techniques, ensuring that this treasured tradition remains alive and continues to inspire new generations
