Green on a pysanka is spring, hope, freshness, renewal and victory of life over death. Poppies are symbolic of death and remembrance. The basket is woven in the style of a traditional Ukrainian bread called a Kolach and is a symbol of luck, prosperity and a good bounty. The bread is often given as a gift and is the traditional Christmas bread. Ukraine is often referred to as the Breadbasket of Europe. The colour of the poppies are blue, yellow and white. Blue and yellow are the colours of the Ukrainian flag. The pysanka was created with thoughts of renewal and hope of victory.
